Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Wednesday spoke on the telephone with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, the Greek prime minister's press office said.
The prime minister congratulated Trump on his victory in the U.S. elections and underlined the close ties of friendship and cooperation between the Greek and American people.
During their discussion there was stress on Greece's crucial role for peace and security in the surrounding region, especially at a time of increasing destabilisation, and a reference to the great efforts made by the Greek people to face the economic and refugee crises.
They also confirmed the importance of strengthening strategic cooperation between the two countries in a series of areas, following up the recent visit to Greece by U.S. President Barack Obama.
Lastly, they agreed to maintain regular communication over the coming period.
Trump: "I watch the work you do ..."
"I follow the work you do and it brings good results,"Donal Trump said according to government sources to Alexis Tsipras , referring to the refugee - migration issue and the economic sector.
The US President also referred to the the recent Obama visit to Athens, which he described as "very good".
"The Greek people are a great people," he said.
At this point Mr. Tsipras noted that the newly elected president has many Greek-Americans in his close political team, and Mr. Trump replied that Greek Americans voted for him in big majorities.
The conversation ended by the newly eleced US President saying that they will keep in touch and have a new talk after he takes the office and that he would be "happy to meet Tsipras in person."
